On June 13, 2022, Yellowstone National Park closed for the first time in 34 years due to catastrophic flooding caused by unprecedented amounts of rainfall and snowmelt. The flood washed out roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure, immediately halting tourism-based businesses in the park. One of the affected businesses was Yellowstone Roughriders, a horseback riding company owned by Billie Taylor, based just outside the north entrance in Gardiner, Montana. With the park closed and no clear timeline for reopening, Billie’s business came to a standstill. Like many others in Gardiner, she had to quickly adapt to survive. Through interviews with Billie and Gardiner Chamber of Commerce president Mike Skelton, a more personal perspective on the 2022 Yellowstone flood emerges, showing how the catastrophic event not only threatened Billie’s livelihood but also disrupted the entire community, underscoring the critical need for unity and collective action in times of crisis.
