Montana, Montana, Glory of the Seas Airing on Montana PBS May 1, 2025
Montana’s unique relationship with the U.S. Navy for more than a century is explored in the unique documentary, Montana, Montana, Glory of the Seas. It tells the story of two USS MONTANA warships – one old, one new, both leading-edge for their times - and their sailors who captivated Big Sky Country residents in communities small and large, on Indian reservations, and in rural areas. All in the landlocked Treasure State. Producer Craig Wirth, a third-generation Montanan, tells his latest story of Montana and the West with facts and fun. Focusing on the USS MONTANA (SSN 794) nuclear-powered fast attack submarine that is now with the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, MONTANA, MONTANA… first reveals the unknown, or forgotten, legacy of the first USS MONTANA, Armored Cruiser Number 13, that was commissioned in 1908. Along the way it connects these warships to all Montanans who have supported them, their sailors, and our military. The program follows today’s sailors in their daily routines, their training, and traces their visits to Montana where they have learned the state’s history, culture, economy, diversity and values that will sustain them if called to battle in defense of our nation.
