News and Public Affairs Producer, Beth Saboe, has been selected as a recipient of the Association of Health Care Journalists Rural Health Journalism fellowship for Health Journalism 2018. This training event hosted in Phoenix from April 12-15 will welcome hundreds of reporters, editors, producers and news directors taking part in educational sessions, skills-building opportunities and career networking.

Panel presentations will cover a variety of topics including:
• How hospital consolidations are affecting the cost of health care
• What you need to know about reporting on Native American health issues
• Free health data for journalists: How to make the most of it
• The future of veteran’s health

In the third year of production, the Emmy-nominated The Rundown with Beth Saboe, has proven to be an effective distribution platform for Saboe’s reporting on Montana health issues.

“Beth is a highly regarded journalist in Montana, producing content that is well researched, compelling, timely and relevant to our citizens,” said Aaron Pruitt, interim General Manager for MontanaPBS.

“Recently, she researched and reported on the shortage of primary care, mental health and dental care providers in Montana in an episode entitled “Patients in Waiting”,” Pruitt said, “In the course of producing this program, Beth was shocked at the scope of the health care problems in our rural state, especially on our seven Native American reservations. The sheer quantity and diversity of health care challenges we face here in Montana is daunting.”

Saboe notes that Montana is home to more rural areas than urban, and ninety percent of the counties in Montana are considered “frontier” by the federal government. Frontier counties are defined as counties with six or fewer persons per square mile and are the most remote places along the rural-urban continuum. These areas face challenges in providing access to primary medical care that are even greater than the challenges faced by other rural communities.
