Higgins Ridge

On Aug. 4, 1961, a group of smokejumpers found themselves in the middle of a raging wildfire with no escape. A skilled helicopter pilot from Missoula’s Johnson Flying Service set out into the Idaho backcountry to search for the men in the flames and smoke. A dozen survivors – now in their 80s – remember the fire they thought might be their last in the upcoming Montana PBS documentary “Higgins Ridge.” Producer Breanna McCabe will bring this story of comradeship and persistence to Montana PBS this fall.
